Our Church began in an old shoe shop across from the now Webb Funeral Home in 1908. Spruce Pine was a rough, rowdy mining community occupied by workers of diverse cultures and even prisoners to rapidly lay down rails for the railroad to transport out the rich ore deposits called Mica. There were Chinese, Russians, and Italians among the workers.

The main street, now called Lower Street, was a dirt street, plain track by the riverside and a wood depot. A missionary from over Bakersville way, Steven Greene worked tirelessly to minister to those that had settled and worked here. The first Church building was a wooden framed building, a wilderness church. It set across the river at the now intersection of Greenwood Road and old 226, Just past Tri-County Oil. As the town grew on that side of the river, the Church needed to grow, also.

A second building began in the 1920s. Unfortunately, due to the depression, the war, and so many other cultural issues arose. It was finally finished and occupied in the early 40s.

During the building project, members took the stone from local mines and the Altapass Railroad Tunnel for the building. Two excellent stone layers took each and layered them in just the right place like a giant puzzle to create the large masterpiece of Spruce Pine First Baptist Church.

In 1989 the expansion of the Church began to accommodate the growing need for space. The renovation of the sanctuary, with the addition of an education section and a fellowship hall to give it a look it has today. As the town grows, so does this Church.
